Lemmyvision
Branding a Eurovision-like song contest for the fediverse
I joined Lemmy in summer of 2023, an open source discussion platform built for the fediverse. Over time I started wanting to get involved in providing content and growing the community in what is an otherwise very tech-, political-, and meme-centric social media software. I launched Lemmyvision in March of 2024. The announcement reads as follows:
Lemmyvision is inspired from Eureddision (itself a reenactment of the Eurovision song contest) which was held on r/europe some years ago, and based on the participation of national communities / instances and the delicate musical taste of their members (you!).
Every country is welcome to participate! The contest follows the rule of “national languages only” but regional languages are welcome too, if your community would like to feature a song in a regional language of your country, that’s awesome. The aim is to promote different languages and cultures from around the world, to share more between our online communities across Lemmy, and discover songs from lesser known artists. I hope to make it a regular event, so hopefully this works well for the first edition!

I was very scared that my initiative would flop at first, and later was suprised by the overwhelmingly positive response and participation from various users and communities. The first 3 editions saw an average participation of 10+ different communities, and around 80 to 100 unique users voted for their favourite songs each year.

Organizing the event takes about a full week of planning and behind-the-scenes work (preparing submission, voting forms, contacting the relevant communities, writing announcements, collecting submissions, creating playlists, calculating results…) ; all of it scattered across the month Lemmyvision happens.

My favourite part is coming up with the branding for each edition, it’s a very laid back event, so I’m trying to balance between creating satisfying assets quality and aesthetic wise, and not putting in too much effort that would absorb my focus away from my other responsibilities.

The next, and fourth edition is planned to happen around April 2027. Branding for the event is still TBD but I have already created placeholders for the Lemmy community.
